This story has really good descriptions of the protagonist’s home and the strict childhood they recount bitterly being raised by a single mother based on how the protagonist describes their upbringing. It sounds like their mother was well off but had a very cold attitude towards their child and didn’t tolerate rule breaking. For God’s sake she locked her kid in a closet, who does that?? That’s probably why the main character is so distant when talking about the house and barely mention their mother’s passing, being the reason they returned to their childhood home. Their father is only mentioned in pictures and letters, looking upon them as an adult the protagonist is upset but not from his absence. It seems to me more like they’re jealous because their mother didn’t seem to care about their child very much, but always looked so happy in pictures with the main character’s father and wrote letters to him with love and passion.
